Scott Cornwell and Susan Price, owners of The Smokestack, came to Dubuque by way of an accidental stop on a July, 2013 road trip, between visiting Grundy County, Iowa, where Susan’s ancestors settled and lived from the 1850s to the 1880s, and visiting Scott’s hometown of Prairie Du Sac, Wisconsin. Falling in love with Dubuque in their less than 24 hour stay, they wanted to contribute to Dubuque and be a part of its vibrant community, so Scott and Susan came to Dubuque not knowing a soul in December, 2013.
They took everything they had and put their minds, hearts and souls into making this space a new experience for Dubuque and Iowa, citizens and visitors alike. Their love for the building as they found it reminded them of the most exciting buildings and nightlife experiences from their lives in New York City, and that love directly led to their decision to open the building fully to the public, by creating a unique venue while also preserving the raw, industrial and distressed aesthetic they first saw in the building, in keeping with Asian aesthetics which exalt the beauty of aging and imperfection. The Smokestack, was born.
